Dog Squad arrests man who fled Hawthorn East crash scene

Dog Squad members arrested a man who allegedly fled after crashing a stolen car in Hawthorn East early this morning.

Emergency services were called to reports that a car had struck a set of traffic lights and the driver had run from the scene at the intersection of Toorak and Tooronga roads about 12.30am.

A member of the public contacted police after seeing a man acting suspiciously nearby.

A police dog and handler attended and located the man hiding in a backyard.

The 33-year-old Kilsyth man was interviewed and is expected to be charged with theft of motor vehicle and other theft and traffic-related offences.

The vehicle was allegedly stolen from a Ferntree Gully address on 14 January.
