Donations Welcome For Library's Community Food Appeal

Donations are now being accepted for the Wagga Wagga City Library's Community Food Appeal.

Each year, the Library collects donations of food and personal items from community members and donates them to a local organisation for distribution to locals in need.

This year the Library is partnering with Carevan Wagga Wagga which provides meals and social connections for vulnerable people in the community through its Dining with Dignity Program.

The program sees two sit-down evening meals served at different locations across the city three nights per week , on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Carevan is an independent organisation based in Wagga Wagga and operates through grant funding, donations and the work of their 80 volunteers. In 2025, Carevan distributed 28,000 meals to people in need in the local community.

Meals are free with no questions asked. Carevan also distributes meals to people experiencing food insecurity through their Frozen Food Program.

Library Services Manager Christine Bolton said all food donations will go directly to those who need them.

"Our partnership this year with Carevan ensures food and personal items donated through the Library's Community Food Appeal will be given to local families experiencing hardship," Ms Bolton said

Donations of in-date, non-perishable food, toiletries and other consumables such as cleaning products are now being accepted until Friday 9 January 2026.

Donations can be made inside the library's main entrance, at the base of the Christmas Tree display, or delivered to one of the friendly Agile Library Officers at any of our suburban or rural village library stops.

"Over the years the community have remained as generous as ever, and we are confident this year will be no different," Ms Bolton said.

WORKING HARD Carevan's volunteers are currently working to build up a supply of meals to distribute to the community to see them through the Christmas shut-down period.

Public libraries promote equality within our communities and keep them connected through a variety of programs and services.

Whether it's fostering a love of books at Storytime, encouraging lifelong learning opportunities, reading for leisure or accessing information services, your library helps everyone in so many different ways.

Wagga Wagga City Library will be closed for the Christmas and New Year holidays from 4pm Wednesday 24 December 2025 and will reopen at 10am on Monday 5 January 2026.
