Council has endorsed the draft environment strategy 'Sustainable Stonnington 2040' and its five supporting Action Plans for public exhibition and is inviting residents, businesses and community groups to review it and provide feedback via Connect Stonnington.
The draft Strategy will bring together Council's environmental efforts under one integrated, long-term approach. It provides streamlined and complementary actions, defined timelines and responsibilities, as well as measures to track and report on progress.
The supporting Action Plans outline priority work for 2026-2029 across five areas: preparing for climate change, reducing emissions, managing water and flood risks, protecting and expanding green spaces, and reducing waste through reuse and recycling.
Each plan also identifies areas where Council will advocate to the Victorian Government for funding, policy reform and stronger planning controls to support environmentally sustainable development.
Developed with input from residents, community groups and stakeholders, the draft Strategy reflects strong local support for environmental action.
City of Stonnington Mayor Cr Melina Sehr said the draft Strategy is Council's commitment to create a cooler, greener and more resilient city.
"The future of Stonnington will be shaped by the choices we make today," Cr Sehr said.
"Residents have told us they want practical solutions, clear information, visible leadership from Council and greater collaboration on environmental issues."
"This draft Strategy provides a roadmap for delivering that work and helping Stonnington respond to climate change and environmental challenges over the coming years."
The final Sustainable Stonnington 2040 strategy and its supporting Action Plans will work alongside Council's Open Space Strategy and Sports Infrastructure Plan to help make the most of our spaces to create a greener, cooler, more liveable and sustainable city.
Community feedback will help shape the final Strategy before it is considered by Council for adoption. Feedback is open until 29 September 2026 and community members can view the draft Strategy and provide comments via Connect Stonnington.
