Drink and drug driving school zone blitz, SA

Ten motorists were caught drink or drug driving today as part of an ongoing Operation called Stop Drink/Drug Drive, according to SA Police.

More than 1340 motorists were stopped by police and required to undergo a breath test for alcohol while 173 were drug tested around school zones during the morning and afternoon of Monday 18 September.

A 36-year-old man tested positive to cannabis when he was stopped in the western suburbs. He was also reported for disobey reasonable direction.

A 44-year-old man recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.036, in breach of his licence conditions, in the southern suburbs.

A 52-year-old man tested positive to methamphetamine while driving near a southern suburbs school.

A 30-year-old man tested positive to cannabis in the western suburbs.

A 48-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man both tested positive to methamphetamine outside a western suburbs school.

A 43-year-old man recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.084 outside a Mid North school. His vehicle was impounded and he received a six month loss of licence.

A 36-year-old woman tested positive to a combination of methamphetamine and cannabis when she was stopped in the southern suburbs. Also of concern to police; there were three children in the car. Families SA have been notified.

A 43-year-old man tested positive to methamphetamine near a Murray Mallee school with children present in the car. Families SA have been notified.

All of the drivers are expected to face further consequences once forensic testing is completed.

Police will continue to focus on road safety by actively policing drink and drug driving, especially during the busy school pick up and drop off times.

Drivers and riders are reminded that they can be stopped at random by a police officer anywhere at any time in metro and regional SA and tested for alcohol and illicit drugs.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1961, it is an offence for a motorist to drive or attempt to drive a motor vehicle with THC (Cannabis), Methylamphetamine (Speed, Ice or Crystal Meth) or MDMA (Ecstasy) present in their oral fluid or blood. Unlike the .05 blood alcohol limit, there is no limit when it comes to drugs. It is an offence to get behind the wheel with illicit drugs in your system.
