Drink driving and speeding charges in Ayr, QLD

Police have charged an alleged drink driver after he was detected travelling at speeds of more than 200 kilometres per hour through Ayr last night, Queensland Police say.

It will be alleged at around 10.20pm an officer from Bowen conducting a TruCam deployment on the Bruce Highway detected a white Commodore sedan being driven at 195km per hour.

Police from Ayr station proceeded along the highway to the Mount Inkerman area where they detected on their mobile radar a vehicle matching the same description allegedly travelling up to 207km per hour in a 100km zone.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle however it allegedly drove away at speed northbound on the Bruce Highway, passing an undercover police vehicle near Burdekin Bridge at 137km per hour in a 70km per hour zone.

A short time later police attended a nearby service station where they located the alleged driver refuelling his vehicle.

He was tested for drink driving and returned at Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.78%.

A 35-year-old Townsville has been charged with two counts of disobeying the speed limit and one count each of fail to stop motor vehicle, driving unlicensed and drink driving.

His vehicle was immobilized and he is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on October 17.
