A driver for a ridesharing service has been assaulted and his phone stolen at Bexley overnight, NSW Police say.

The 34-year-old man was called to Forest Road, about 10pm today, and stopped near a group of three men.

The driver stopped and got out, before being further assaulted.

The men fled with the driver’s mobile phone.

Officers from St George Local Area Command were called to the scene and have initiated an investigation; the vehicle has been taken for forensic examination.

The driver sustained cuts and abrasions to his arms but declined medical attention at the scene.

The man is described as being of African appearance, of a medium build, about 25 years old, 170cm tall, and a black beard. He was wearing a dark coloured jumper and pants.
