An 18-year-old George Town man has been charged by police after he was detected speeding at 163km/h in the 100km/h zone on the East Tamar Highway at Dilston this afternoon.
The driver was intercepted by police and issued an infringement notice for $1,161 and he will be subject to a mandatory four-month disqualification from driving.
"Speeding continues to be a major contributing factor in serious and fatal crashes on our roads," said Sergeant Fergus Cameron.
"Inexperienced driving, combined with high speed, put the driver, his three teenager passengers, and other road users, at unreasonable risk."
"Police will continue to patrol our roads to keep our community safe and importantly, we can be anywhere at any time."
"I urge all motorists to slow down and obey the speed limit."
