Driver ends up in River Torrens after long pursuit, South Australia

A man has been arrested following a pursuit last night.

Just before 7.45pm on Thursday 12 August, police spotted a Honda Civic travelling north on Main North Road at Elizabeth Park.

The Honda was suspected of being involved in a convenience store robbery earlier that day in Davoren Park.

Police directed the driver to stop however he refused and the car was pursued on to Uley Road and Main North Road where police terminated the pursuit and called in the Police Helicopter to assist.

The Honda was tracked through North Adelaide where he collided with a parked car in the car park of a hotel on Melbourne Street and with a fence on Edith Street.

Patrols successfully spiked the car on Seaview Road at Henley Beach. The pursuit came to an end when the Honda collided with a large rock on River Road at Torrensville. The driver abandoned the car and ran into the River Torrens. However he quickly surrendered himself to police and he was arrested without incident.

Checks revealed that the car had been stolen from Woodville earlier in the week.

A 22-year-old man from Salisbury East has been charged with driving dangerously to escape a police pursuit, failing to stop and give particulars after a crash, driving unlicensed and breaching his bail conditions. He was refused police bail and will appear in Elizabeth Magistrates Court today (Friday 13 August).
