With a number of motorists making poor decisions on the roads NSW Police are reminding road users to act responsibly and consider the safety of others as they travel, NSW Police say.
Operation Stay Alert commenced at midnight on Friday 9 June 2017 and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday 12 June 2017. Double demerits are in force throughout the period.
Officers will be a highly-visible presence on the roads during the operation, targeting speeding, mobile phone use, alcohol, drug-affected drivers, fatigue and seatbelt use.
A 36-year-old man died after the car he was travelling in crashed into a tree at Yass about 12.10am today.
Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said he was disappointed with some driver behaviour.
"We have already seen a number of motorists take unnecessary risks on the road this long weekend," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.
"After the recent wet-weather conditions, we don’t want to see an increase in road trauma following the conclusion of this operation," he said.
"Road fatalities have a tragic effect on everyone involved, from the families who must grieve a loved one, to the police who attended the crash, and the communities who have lost one of their own."

Some examples of inappropriate driver behaviour detected during Day Two of Operation Stay Alert include;
BLUE MOUNTAINS:
A driver is expected to be charged after leading police on a foot pursuit near Penrith. The driver allegedly stole a vehicle in Orchard Hills about 8.30pm yesterday. He was then involved in several car crashes and attempted to steal another vehicle when he was arrested. When the driver was searched police allegedly located the drug ICE and he was conveyed to hospital. He will be charged in relation to the incident.
NORTHERN BEACHES:
A 36-year-old woman was arrested and charged with drink driving after she was detected driving along Allambie Road, Allambie, about 10.35am yesterday. The bus she was driving was carrying disabled passengers at the time of the incident.
WOLLONGONG:
About 9.20pm yesterday, police stopped a driver on Robertson Street, Helensburgh, after it was observed driving with no lights on. The learner driver was submitted to a breath analysis which returned a positive result. The learner’s supervisor was also breath tested and returned a positive reading. Both men were arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station where they were charged with mid-range and low-range PCA.
COOTAMUNDRA:
A woman will face court in August after she was allegedly detected driving under the influence of alcohol on Wombat Street, Young. The 35-year-old woman was stopped about 11.10pm yesterday, when she allegedly ran from police. She was arrested and returned a breath analysis reading of 0.153. The woman’s licence was confiscated and suspended. She will appear in Young Local Court on 8 August 2017.
BATHURST:
A 47-year-old man had his licence suspended after he was allegedly detected drink driving. The man was pulled over just after midnight yesterday, and breath tested returning a positive reading. He later returned a breath analysis reading of 0.144 and will be issued a future court attendance notice.
LACHLAN:
Police located a vehicle stopped in the middle of Parkes Road at Condobolin with the driver asleep at the wheel. The driver later returned a breath analysis reading of 0.157 and was charged with high range drink driving.
OXLEY:
About 12.30am today, police allegedly detected a Holden Commodore speeding on Bridge Street, Tamworth. Police activated their lights and sirens and the driver allegedly failed to stop so a pursuit was initiated. The 19-year-old driver was arrested after stopping on Kent Street. He was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he returned a breath analysis reading of 0.225. He was charged with a number of offences including high range PCA, police pursuit – not stop – Skye’s Law and drive in a manner dangerous. The P-plate driver also had his licence confiscated and suspended.
