Drivers urged to slow down - Operation Stay Alert: Day 2, NSW

NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol officers are urging motorists to slow down when travelling this long weekend., NSW Police say

Police are concerned at the significant amount of speeding offences overnight with more than 1500 speeding infringements issued across the State during Operation Stay Alert so far.

Just before 12.30am today, emergency services were called to Eglinton Road, Bathurst, following reports a vehicle had rolled.

The male driver, a 21-year-old with a provisional licence, was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to Bathurst Hospital.

A male passenger in the vehicle was also treated by paramedics before being taken Orange Hospital with significant head injuries.

Officers attached to Chiefly Local Area Command with the assistance of the Crash Investigation Unit, established a crime scene and commenced and investigation.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner, John Hartley, is urging drivers to slow down on the roadways with speeding infringements up by 743 from 2015.

"Speeding is a risk that can lead to a tragedy. Drivers need to slow down and remain alert while on the road. I urge everyone to take care, drive responsibly, respect other motorists and obey the road rules," Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.

So far during Operation Stay Alert, 3055 people have been issued speeding infringements.

More than 120,000 breath tests have been conducted with 98 drink drivers charged. At the same time last year, 116,762 breath tests were conducted with 217 people charged.

Across the state there have been more than 140 major crashes with 50 people injured.

The road toll stands at two, the same as 2015.

Operation Stay Alert urges motorists not to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and maintain alertness while on the road concludes at 11.59pm tomorrow.

Double demerit points will be in force and apply for all speeding, seat belt and motorcycle helmet offences during this period.

Surry Hills LAC:

Just after 5am today, officers attached to Surry Hills Highway Patrol detected a car driving at 107kmh in a 50kmh zone along Wattle Street, Ultimo. The driver, a 25-year-old man, was also subjected to a random breath test where he allegedly returned a positive result. The man was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with high range PCA and exceed speed over 45kmh. He will appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 7 July 2016.

Hawkesbury LAC:

About 8.30pm on Saturday 11 June 2016, officers attached to Hawkesbury LAC were conducting speed tests on Bells Line of Road at Bilpin. Police detected a white Ford Falcon sedan, travelling at 130kmh in an 80kmh zone. The 19-year-old provisional driver was charged with exceed speed over 45kmh and had his licence was suspended.

Griffith LAC:

Just before 2.00am today, officers attached to Griffith Local Area Command were conducting mobile breath tests in Narrandera. Police will allege a 24-year-old man was pulled over and underwent a random breath test, where he returned a positive result. The man, who had an expired provisional licence, was arrested and taken to Narrandera Police Station where he was charged with mid range PCA.
