Drivers Urged to Stay Safe on Newcastle, Hunter Roads This Weekend

Police are reminding motorists to put safety first as increased holiday traffic, warmer spring weather and NRL Grand Final celebrations are expected to make for a busy Labour Day long weekend across Newcastle and the Hunter.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra travel time, remain alert behind the wheel and look out for other road users, particularly in areas where increased pedestrian activity is expected throughout the weekend.

Operation Labour Day 2026 commences at 12.01am on Friday 2 October 2026 and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday 5 October 2026.

Officers attached to Newcastle-Hunter Sector Highway Patrol, supported by local police and specialist commands, will target the major contributors to road trauma, including drink and drug driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, speeding, and seatbelt and helmet offences, with double demerits for certain offences in place for the duration of the operation.

With many people expected to travel throughout the region for the long weekend, police are reminding motorists to plan their journeys, take regular breaks and exercise patience on the road.

Police are also urging road users to be mindful of increased pedestrian activity, particularly around beaches, hospitality venues, entertainment precincts and town centres, as people enjoy the warmer weather and gather to watch Sunday's NRL Grand Final.

Already this year 261 lives have been lost on our roads. That's compared to 250 at this time last year.

Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley said small decisions can have devastating consequences on the road.

"Too many lives have been shattered by road trauma and police see the effects of this-first hand."

"Every decision you make behind the wheel could mean the difference between life and death so slow down and obey the road rules."

"Police will be out in force across the state this long weekend, targeting the major contributors to road trauma. If you break the law, you can expect to see red and blue flashing lights in your rear-view mirror."

Newcastle-Hunter Sector Highway Patrol Chief Inspector Thomas Barnes said drivers needed to recognise the increased risks that come with a busy long weekend on the region's roads.

"We're expecting increased traffic, particularly across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and the Hunter Valley, as people take advantage of the long weekend and warmer weather," Chief Inspector Barnes said.

"With more vehicles on the road, there is less room for mistakes. A moment of inattention, speeding, driving while tired or making a poor decision after drinking can have devastating consequences."

"Our officers will be highly visible throughout the operation, conducting patrols and random breath and drug testing across the region. If you're doing the wrong thing, there's a strong chance you'll be caught."

"Whether you're heading away for the weekend, travelling to watch the footy, or just making a short trip close to home, plan ahead, leave plenty of time and make safety your priority."

With the NRL Grand Final set to take place on Sunday (4 October 2026), police are reminding motorists that increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic is expected across the region as people travel to watch the match, attend licensed venues or celebrate with family and friends.

Police will also be focusing on pedestrian safety and monitoring alcohol-related incidents throughout the long weekend.

Chief Inspector Barnes said everyone had a role to play in keeping the community safe over the Grand Final weekend.

"We know many people will be gathering with friends and family to watch the Grand Final and we want everyone to enjoy the occasion safely," Chief Inspector Barnes said.

"If you're planning to drink, organise a safe way home before you go out. Don't leave it until the end of the night and don't risk getting behind the wheel."

"Drivers also need to be aware there will be more pedestrians around entertainment precincts, licensed venues and town centres throughout the weekend. Slow down, stay alert and look out for people who may be crossing roads or moving between venues."

"No matter what your plans are this long weekend, every road user has a responsibility to help keep our roads safe."
