Driving Home Message This National Road Safety Week

Shellharbour City Council is proud to support National Road Safety Week, running from 17 to 24 May 2026, encouraging people to drive so others survive.

To mark the week, Council will light up the Shellharbour Civic Centre in yellow from Monday 18 May, joining communities across Australia in recognising the impact of road trauma and reinforcing the importance of safer roads.

Road trauma is the leading cause of death for children aged one to 14, and the second most common cause of death for those aged 15 to 24 according to the National Road Safety Data Hub.

Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said National Road Safety Week is an important reminder that everyone has a role to play in preventing serious injuries and loss of life on our roads.

"Road safety isn't just about rules, it's about looking out for one another," the Mayor said.

"By slowing down, staying alert and making safe choices, we can help ensure everyone gets home safely."

As part of the road safety week, Council will host a child-friendly interactive educational experience on Thursday 21 May in the Shellharbour Civic Centre foyer.

Activities on the day will include a play-safe road crossing experience with stop/go signs and car dress-ups, road safety themed puzzles and colouring-in and a road safety storytime. Plus, a NSW Highway Patrol car will stop by for a visit from 10am - 12pm.

Council is also encouraging families and schools to take part in Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 22 May, which falls during National Road Safety Week. The Mayor encouraged parents, carers and students to consider walking to school where possible, and to use the day as an opportunity to practise safe pedestrian behaviours.

"Walking to school is a great way to improve health, reduce congestion and help children develop confidence around roads," Mayor Homer said.

"Walk Safely to School Day is a timely reminder for drivers to be extra alert around schools and crossings, and for families to talk about safe routes and road awareness."
