Drug operation closure at Gold Coast

Police charged five people with multiple offences after seizing a quantity of drugs and cash during a number of co-ordinated searches at residences across the Gold Coast last week which saw the closure of Operation Sierra Carious.

On January 29, police searched six addresses in Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Labrador, Coomera, Southport and Morayfield, allegedly seizing a quantity of drugs including cocaine and MDMA, along with approximately $35,000 cash, a number of mobile phones and drug utensils.

Details of charges

A 21-year-old Surfers Paradise man was charged with three counts of possess dangerous drugs, two counts each of trafficking dangerous drugs and supplying dangerous drugs, and one count each of possess dangerous drugs, possess anything used in the commission of a crime, possess anything for use in the commission of a crime, possess utensils, possess property suspected as being proceeds of an offence and contravene an access order for storage device. He is next due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on February 16.

A 23-year-old Main Beach man was charged with three counts of possessing dangerous drugs, two counts each of trafficking dangerous drugs and contravene order, and one count each of supplying dangerous drugs, possess restricted drug, possess anything used in the commission of a crime and possess anything for use in the commission of a crime. He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on February 15.

A 37-year-old Coomera man was charged with one count each of possess dangerous drugs and possess property suspected as proceeds of a drug offence. He was issued a notice to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on February 24.

A 46-year-old Main Beach woman was charged with one count of possess utensil and a 28-year-old Surfers Paradise woman was charged with one count of contravene order.

Operation Sierra Carious

The charges bring a close to Operation Sierra Carious, a drug operation aimed at disrupting the distribution of drugs in the south east region.

Throughout the eight-month operation police charged 40 people with 207 offences including trafficking, supplying and possessing dangerous drugs, weapons offences and others.

Approximately $560,000 cash, two firearms and a significant quantity of drugs including MDMA, cocaine, cannabis, methylamphetamine, GHB, ketamine, LSD and steroids were seized.

Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said: "Through dedicated policing strategies, this operation has seen the dismantling of a significant drug supply network in the south east region.

"There are significant quantities of illegal substances that now won't see the streets, and we will continue to detect, investigate and disrupt those individuals and networks who engage in this criminal activity.

"If people choose to get involved in the business of selling drugs, they can expect to be actively targeted by police, and risk significant prison sentences."
