A new bridge across the Mulgrave River in Goldsborough is nearing completion, replacing the former Fisheries Bridge damaged during the December 2023 flooding.
As part of Council's flood recovery program, the $9.37 million bridge reconstruction is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), administered through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA).
To support community recovery and involvement, Council undertook public consultation between October and November 2025, inviting residents to suggest a name for the new bridge.
The majority of respondents supported retaining the longstanding name, Fisheries Bridge.
In line with Council's Naming of Community Infrastructure General Policy, Traditional Owners were also invited to contribute a culturally significant name.
The Dulabed Malanbarra Yidinji Aboriginal Corporation proposed "Balngga-L", meaning "crossing on a log over a creek or river".
The dual name, Fisheries Bridge Balngga-L, reflects the area's history, cultural heritage and resilience, while maintaining strong community support.
Council would like to acknowledge the support by both levels of government under the DRFA.
