Road repair and widening works on two narrow sections of the Dunkeld-Cavendish Road will commence shortly following an announcement from Acting Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the TAC Jacinta Allan today.
The $4.5 million upgrade will ensure the road is safer and equipped to handle rising levels of traffic travelling in either direction. Currently, there are sections of the road where vehicles are unable to pass each other while remaining on the sealed surface.
The upgrade will ensure these sections have a full lane in each direction, as well as sealed shoulders to further boost safety for the communities and industries that travel this road every day.
Works, which will see 7.5km of narrow road widened and repaired, will begin 20 January and, weather permitting, are expected to be completed by mid-April 2020.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Chris Sharples, said the announcement was a fantastic result for those who regularly use the road and testament to the community support and Council advocacy directed towards the upgrade.
"Many members of our community have actively pursued Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) in regards to this upgrade and it has been high on the agenda of Councilors and Council officers when advocating for improvements to our local roads," Cr Sharples said.
"The Dunkeld-Cavendish Road is an important arterial for many members of our community and this upgrade will greatly improve safety and allow for a much more enjoyable journey through the Karrabeal area.
"We would like to acknowledge the support of Regional Roads Victoria and Minister for Roads and Member for Western Victoria, the Hon. Jaala Pulford for their commitment to this project and look forward to seeing works underway very shortly.
"We also congratulate members of the Southern Grampians Shire who have contributed to this multi-million dollar upgrade through their active campaigning and thank them for their patience in achieving what is an excellent result for all," concluded Cr Sharples.
