Old mobile phones are being donated to help provide a safety net for domestic violence victims, as part of Western Downs Regional Council's partnership with DV Safe Phone.
Council has facilitated the donation of its old mobile phones to assist in getting domestic violence victims the help they need.
Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Cr Peter Saxelby, said this initiative gives people impacted by domestic and family violence a vital lifeline.
"For many victims of domestic and family violence, having access to a safe, discreet phone can be the difference between staying trapped and reaching out for help.
"Sometimes, a simple burner phone is the only way to call for support without fear of being tracked or monitored.
"Council is proud to support the DV Safe Phone initiative and play a role in putting safe, secure communication into the hands of those who need it most.
"Everyone deserves the ability to call for help, and this program helps make that possible for victims of domestic and family violence.
"Since 2020 the DV Safe Phone program has distributed 12,500 phone kits across Australia, providing domestic violence victims with a working mobile phone, charger, sim card, and phone credit.
"These phone kits can be used to help domestic violence victims build a new life.
"These unused devices would otherwise be gathering dust in drawers or end up as e-waste, but through this initiative, they're given a second life with real purpose," he said.
