East Gippsland is standing united this November and December to raise awareness and act against gender-based violence. From 25 November to 10 December, communities across the region and around the world will join the global movement calling for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
East Gippsland Shire Council is proud to support this important campaign, which this year in Victoria centres on the theme 'A violence-free Victoria: It all starts with respect'. This message reflects the values we want to see embedded across our community.
Respect, connection, and community spirit lie at the heart of making our region a safer place for everyone.
To mark the start of the 16 Days of Activism, Council's Corporate Centre will glow orange at dusk on 25 November, symbolising hope for a brighter future free from violence. An art installation will also highlight the campaign, encouraging reflection and conversation throughout the community.
Across Council's service centres and libraries, staff will proudly wear "Hands Up for Respect" t-shirts and share information about support services available to anyone affected by violence.
In partnership with the East Gippsland Community Safety Committee, Partners in Violence Prevention, and other key agencies, a variety of local activities will bring people together, culminating in a Twilight Community Colour Fun Event and community BBQ on Friday 5 December in Bairnsdale. This inclusive celebration is a chance for the community to connect, share, and show that respect is more than a message - it's something we live every day.
Together, we can make East Gippsland a place where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.
Join us in taking a stand because a stronger, safer community starts with all of us.
