As part of North East Link Project works, a full closure of the Eastern Freeway will occur between Bulleen Road and Doncaster Road from 10:00pm Friday 7 November to 5:00am Monday 10 November.
This closure is required to facilitate the removal of the existing Estelle Street pedestrian bridge. To complete the works and safely open the bridge to the public, there will be a period of up to 3 weeks with no walking or cycling access across the freeway near Estelle Street, Bulleen and Carron Street, Balwyn North.
To assist pedestrians crossing the freeway over this time, a shuttle service will operate between Estelle Street and Carron Street every 30 minutes from 7:00am to 6:00pm.
What is expected:
- Significant delays of up to 90 minutes are expected over this weekend's closure.
- Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and avoid the area where possible.
- The closure will also impact the broader road network, with increased traffic expected on Doncaster Road, Tram Road, Manningham Road and Middleborough Road.
- On-ramps leading to the closed section of the freeway will also be closed to help distribute traffic and minimise delays. Electronic signs and detours will be in place to guide road users throughout the weekend.
Following the freeway closure, the T1 exit ramp (Doncaster Road outbound exit ramp) and High Street will be closed from 10 November until mid-December.
This closure will support critical works associated with the new Doncaster Road Bridge and will include:
- installation of multiple drainage and watermain services across High Street
- drainage, kerb and pavement works on High Street
- earthworks on the Doncaster Road outbound exit ramp
- permanent retaining wall piling and structural concrete works
- asphalting and line marking on High Street and the outbound ramp to enable a traffic switch.
