eBay rolls out the first virtual reality department store

– While virtual reality was largely explored as a route for gamers to have a more immersive experience, we’ve quickly seen the growth into markets like education and porn. Now, eBay has shown us that the future of shopping may also sit in VR, Digital Spy said.

Launching alongside Australian retailer Myer, the company has introduced what it describes as the world’s first VR department store. Instead of traipsing through floors and escalators, shoppers can now view thousands of products without leaving their home.

Once the eBay Virtual Reality Department Store app is downloaded to your Android or iOS device, you can strap on your headset – such as the Samsung Gear VR- and sift through the products.

When you enter the virtual store, several categories of retail items are shown. Users select areas of interest, and the experience is built around their choices.

As you continue to move through, selecting or rejecting items, the store’s algorithm should further adapt to what users are more interested in.

The interesting innovation eBay is hanging its hat on is the development of ‘Sight Search’, which allows an item to be chosen by holding your focus on it for a number of seconds.

There’s still plenty to work out, like making transactions easier (you currently have to leave the VR experience to enter details via smartphone), but we’re excited at the prospect of not having to look for a parking spot, Digital Spy said.
