Ecuador Strengthens Maritime Security Governance

Coordinated action and shared information can enhance the engagement of all stakeholders and the implementation of maritime security measures. Ecuador is the latest country to benefit from a national workshop (1-5 September) to support the country in enhancing its national maritime security decision-making, policy development and implementation.

The workshop, held in Guayaquil, focused on technical aspects of the "IMO's Whole of Government Approach to Maritime Security", emphasizing inter-institutional coordination and the importance of national information-sharing mechanisms.

The "Whole of Government Approach to Maritime Security" is an innovative programme of integrated workshops and tailored support to the specific needs of the respective Member State. It provides a practical framework for establishing structures, registers and strategies, which together strengthen national maritime security decision-making and governance.

The event gathered 28 participants from across government bodies, including representatives from Ecuador's Maritime Authority.

Global threats in the maritime sector such as piracy, terrorism, and cybercrime were addressed. IMO's support will enable Ecuador to establish a National Maritime Security Committee, a National Risk Register, and National Security Strategies.
