The introduction of minimum conditions for the keeping of racing greyhounds will be aided by a major funding boost delivered by the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Racing Martin Pakula today announced that the Government would invest $1 million to provide practical support to help participants comply with the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds.
Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has matched the grant, taking the total introduction package to $2 million.
The new code comes into effect on 1 January and sets minimum standards for the operation of greyhound establishments to ensure that the physical and behavioural needs of racing animals are met.
Other features of the code include simplified facility and fencing regulations, standard rehoming processes and a requirement for facilities to have a consolidated Establishment and Health Management Plan.
The Labor Government funding will help GRV deliver a range of initiatives, including:
- Support for veterinary staff to help participants create mandatory Establishment and Health Management Plans
- Development of an Establishment and Health Management Plan and declarations portal
- Workshops on the code's requirements for participants and clubs
- Phone and online resources for participants, including the creation of video content.
Since November 2014, the Labor Government has provided $11.5 million in grants to the greyhound racing industry through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, supporting more than 150 projects.
The greyhound racing industry contributes $500 million to the Victorian economy each year and supports more than 4,300 full-time-equivalent jobs.
