Eight arrested over disturbance in CBD, SA

Police have arrested eight people following a large disturbance in the Adelaide CBD early this morning, according to SA Police.

About 1.20am on Friday 18 May police attended North terrace near Bank Street after reports of a man damaging and attempting to remove a street sign.

When patrols arrived, they found a large group of up to 30 people causing a disturbance in the street.

As police attempted to arrest a person, the remainder of the crowd became aggressive and hostile towards the officers with some attempting to pull police away from the arrested man.

During the altercation, one police officer was punched in the face and a security officer from a licensed premises nearby was also assaulted. They both sustained minor injuries.

Police brought in further resources to disperse the crowd safely from the area.

As a result, eight people were arrested over the incident.

  • A 19-year-old man from Brighton charged with aggravated affray
  • A 19-year-old man from Plympton charged with aggravated affray
  • An 18-year-old man from Dover Gardens charged with aggravated affray
  • A 19-year-old man from Brighton charged with aggravated affray, property damage and hinder police
  • A 19-year-old man from Flagstaff Hill charged with aggravated affray, hinder and resist police and assault police
  • An 18-year-old man from Glengowrie charged with aggravated affray
  • An 18-year-old woman from Kingston Park charged with property damage

All eight people were bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 29 June.

Investigations into the incident are continuing. Police will be reviewing CCTV to identify other people involved and expect further charges to be laid.
