Eight lives lost in 72 hours

Several serious crashes over the weekend have prompted police to issue a warning to motorists to drive responsibly.

This weekend alone has seen eight lives lost on Queensland's roads with a number of others now suffering serious injuries.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, four lives were lost in Townsville when a car flipped after clipping a roundabout. This was after an infant died in a single vehicle traffic crash in Mackay on Saturday afternoon.

Two men also died in a three-vehicle collision around 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon at Bethania.

Later Sunday night, a collision occurred between a car and a truck on the Warrego Highway at Oakey. An altercation has occurred between the two drivers when the driver of the car attempted to grab hold of the truck as it drove off and was thrown into oncoming traffic.

A 19-year-old man was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Around 2.30am Monday morning, police were called to a traffic crash on Johnson Road at Carole Park after a passing motorist observed a motorcycle had crashed.

A 29-year-old woman died at the scene while a 31-year-old man was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

Just prior to this, three people were transported to hospital, one in a critical condition, following a single vehicle crash in Brisbane's north.

A woman and two men were observed travelling at high speed south along the Bruce Highway. The car crashed leaving all three occupants with serious injuries.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said this weekend has been a tragic weekend and should serve as a reminder for all motorists to drive responsibly.

"We have seen a range of circumstances where families are now without loved ones," Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

"The number of people who have died on Queensland roads this year is up dramatically in comparison to this time last year and it's not acceptable.

"Police will continue to conduct enforcement activities; however motorists need to take control and drive responsibly on our roads.

"Poor actions and decisions have grave consequences, not only for you but for those who care about you."

Anyone who witnessed these serious crashes, or who may have dashcam footage, should contact police.
