Elderly woman indecently assaulted during break-in in Edgeworth

A man has been charged after the alleged repeated indecent assault of an elderly woman at Edgeworth, NSW Police say.

Between 6pm and 8.10pm yesterday, an 85-year-old woman was alone in her home at Edgeworth, when a man entered the house.

The man allegedly indecently assaulted the woman several times over this period of time, until the woman was able to press an alarm.

A relative of the victim attended, and sighted the man leaving the home.

Ambulance Paramedics attended and treated the woman for a number of non life threatening injuries.

Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command commenced an investigation.

A crime scene was established which was examined by forensic specialists.

About 8.30pm the same night, a 53-year-old man was arrested at Cameron Park.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with aggravated break and enter; and assault with intent to commit sexual assault.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.

It is understood the man had undertaken gardening work at the victim’s address on past occasions.
