Emergency crews responding to truck fire on South-Eastern Freeway, South Australia

Motorists are advised a truck fire on the South-Eastern Freeway near Hahndorf will cause delays for traffic heading into the city this morning.

Just before 4.25am on Monday 24 August, police and fire crews responded to calls of a truck on fire, on the city bound track of the freeway between Mt Barker and Hahndorf.

On arrival, the semi-trailer carrying about 4000 chicken was well alight, but quickly brought under control.

Unfortunately about half of the chickens have perished in the blaze.

Only one lane is open for city bound trucks, the rest of the Adelaide bound traffic is being diverted at Mt Barker through to Hahndorf on the Old Barker Road, and motorists can then get back onto the freeway once through Hahndorf.

The delays are expected to last during peak hour traffic so please allow extra time if you are on the Mt Barker/Littlehampton side of the freeway.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
