Blocking Pattern Breaks Down Over Eastern Australia

BOM
G'day, David from the Bureau with a look ahead at this week's weather across Australia, featuring the breakdown of the blocking pattern which has dominated the past week.

On Saturday, rain continued across Queensland, after a week which saw many areas get multiple times their average October rain. That has been mixed news, providing soil moisture for summer planting but damaging broadacre crops and Lockyer Valley horticulture. Meanwhile, a cold front tapped into all that tropical moisture in the south, bringing rain across South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania, while cold air spread over southern WA.

For the rest of Sunday, that cold air extends east behind the front, with rain pushing into New South Wales. An outbreak of severe storms is forecast from eastern Victoria right up to western Queensland, with damaging winds and large hail that could damage crops and property.

Storms focus on north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland on Monday, while cool temperatures spread across the south-east states, bringing snow to Tasmania and the alpine peaks.

By Tuesday this high extends a ridge across the south, with cool, settled weather and coastal showers. Storms contract to central and western Queensland and the tropical north, where daily build-up storms are becoming a feature, bringing isolated totals of 20 mm to 50 mm each day to parts of the Top End.

Tuesday will also see storms along the inland trough in WA, becoming more widespread on Wednesday. This could impact harvest through the northern Wheatbelt.

This next trough system gathers momentum during Thursday, with showers and storms likely moving east over parts of South Australia and the Northern Territory, while the eastern states begin to warm up under this ridge.

By the time we reach Friday, uncertainty is high on how quickly this system moves east, and if or when this frontal system might reach the west coast.

That's all from us for now, keep an eye on the radar today, stay safe and have a great week.
