Empowering female officers with Logan’s new Buddy System

Logan's Female Buddy Program

Logan’s Female Buddy Progra, Queensland Police saym

On Thursday, September 1 at Logan Central Station 36 officers from Logan District attended the introduction of the Buddy Project. The Buddy Project is aimed at promoting, supporting, empowering and providing assistance to female officers and staff within the Queensland Police Service.

Constable Aroha Tiraa, Constable April Tubb and Constable Whitney Dickson, all of Springwood Station, thought of and developed the concept. They believed they would have benefited in their first year of operational policing from a female figure who provided them with sound advice and direction in policing. With the assistance of Sergeant Kirsty Bowlay from the Logan Education and Training Office the concept was introduced to Logan District.

Attending officers included those from the rank of constable to superintendent. The training day provided an informal platform for the group to discuss current training strategies, negative workplace behaviours, and initiatives to support female officers back into employment after maternity or long periods of leave.

The program will initially be offered as an option for all female first year constables within the Logan District to have a female buddy who will help them to find their feet, answer questions and offer sound advice and direction. The female buddy project will also be offered as an option to female officers transferring in to the Logan District.

In the future it is hoped this concept will be offered to all officers entering Logan District.
