Energy and environment boost for businesses in Monash and beyond

Green subsidies are helping businesses in Monash and beyond to save money while becoming more energy efficient.

Monash Council is administering the Business Energy Savers program on behalf of Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (EAGA) councils to support businesses impacted by COVID-19.

The program is helping small businesses upgrade to energy efficient equipment, LED lighting and solar power, to reduce costs and contribute to Victoria's 2050 zero net emissions target. Small businesses with up to 19 full time equivalent employees can access additional incentives via Sustainability Victoria's Small Business Energy Saver program, which is a Victorian Government initiative.

They can apply for a bonus of up to $2000 each for a range of eligible upgrades. With the bonus amounts, they can cut installation costs by up to 85-95 per cent.

The program allows small businesses to:

  • upgrade to reverse cycle air-conditioners
  • retrofit to LED lighting
  • replace inefficient gas hot water systems
  • install energy efficient refrigerated display cabinets, fridges and freezers
  • upgrade refrigeration and ventilation fans and motors.

Monash Mayor Cr Brian Little said under the program, accredited providers helped registered businesses manage installation, upgrades and paperwork.

"These programs enable businesses to boost their environmental credentials and offer workers 'greener' workspaces, with the benefits trickling down to environmentally conscious customers," Cr Little said.

"The energy efficient equipment can save 15-25 per cent on annual running costs and allow owners to focus more on growing their business. Monash business owners can also apply for the Solar Savers program, which offers rebates of up to 50 per cent (up to $3,500) off the cost of a solar system."

Monash Council runs the Business Energy Savers initiative for EAGA councils including the City of Boroondara, Glen Eira City Council, Knox City Council, Maroondah City Council, Monash City Council, City of Stonnington, Whitehorse City Council and Yarra Ranges Council.
