The NSW Government's funding commitment for a Future Jobs and Investment Authority to support coal-producing regions is an important step towards future-proofing jobs and career pathways for workers, the Mining and Energy Union said today.
MEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy District President Robin Williams said the Hunter's economic prosperity was underpinned by the coal industry.
"Coal will continue to provide good, well-paid jobs for many years to come. However, with significant closures looming, all levels of government must work together to ensure the future prosperity of coal regions like ours.
"This must include investment in new economic development to create skilled jobs as well as support for transitioning workers.
"It is encouraging to see that the Future Jobs and Investment Authority will have a wide remit to act in relation to planning and land use, workforce support, training and attracting investment.
"Our union has long advocated that the workers and communities who power our state must not be abandoned during this transition.
"We will work with the Future Jobs and Investment Authority to make sure it delivers the investment in coal regions and support to workers that today's announcement promises."
