Enthusiasm Embodies Crew's Dedication

If one person embodies the crew's dedication on board HMAS Canberra, it's Leading Seaman Jarryd Dart.

Deployed to Wellington, New Zealand, the communication information systems (CIS) sailor is enthusiastic and able to formulate solutions to arising issues that may occur at his work station.

For CIS sailors, days are high-paced with a wide variety of tasks, particularly with a large number of embarked personnel seeking assistance for communication-related requirements.

Leading Seaman Dart grew up near Nowra, NSW, and completed his schooling at Nowra Christian School before attending university.

However, the pull to join Navy was so strong he had a change of direction and enlisted, as it was always his long-term career goal.

After completing his initial training, he specialised in communications and, after a further 12 months of training, he was ready to take on a role at sea.

After a short stint at Defence Communications Centre, Perth, Leading Seaman Dart joined HMAS Arunta and completed a nine-month deployment to the Middle East.

'I'm trying to take it as far as I can by putting my best foot forward and showing Navy what I can do.'

"This was an interesting and fulfilling period for me in the Navy," he said.

"We got to visit a lot of countries and see different cultures that you wouldn't necessarily see in civilian employment."

During his current deployment on board Canberra, Leading Seaman Dart volunteered some of his free time while in Wellington to assist with Ghost Diving New Zealand.

This is part of a worldwide community of divers who protect and clean the waterways in their respective locations, to reduce the detrimental impact humans have made on the environment.

"I feel that it's important to try to chip in a little bit," Leading Seaman Dart said.

"I do a bit of diving at home, so I saw this as an opportunity to pitch in and to help likeminded people to keep the marine environment clean."

Having only been to New Zealand once before during his childhood, but never to Wellington, Leading Seaman Dart also looked forward to going ashore and relaxing with his peers after a busy period at sea.

"I enjoy my career. I'm trying to take it as far as I can by putting my best foot forward and showing Navy what I can do," he said.

"I look forward to seeing where it takes me in the future."
