Entries open for Young Archies

The Archibald Prize is on its way to Griffith and it brings a plethora of events and activities.

Most notably is the Young Archie Competition which is part of the family-focused activities for the 2020 Archibald Prize regional tour.

Budding artists between the ages of 5 and 18 are invited to submit a portrait of a person who is special to the young artist — someone who is known to them and plays a significant role in their life. Portraits are 'drawn from life', as with the Archibald Prize, or created from memory or a photograph taken by the young artist.

Gallery Curator Ray Wholohan stated "The 'Young Archie' competition is a fantastic way to promote portraiture by young people. If you know a young Picasso, Meyne Wyatt or Wendy Sharpe, tell them about the Young Archies!"

"Participants will have the chance to win cash prizes in four age categories supplied by the Archibald's' principal sponsors, the ANZ Bank, a number of highly commended awards courtesy of the Art Gallery of NSW and Griffith Regional Art Gallery" Mr Wholohan said.

Young Archie's judge, Jessica Blomfield, Branch Manager from ANZ Griffith, will announce the winners and highly commended at the Young Archie Opening at ArtSpace at Griffith Regional Theatre at 4pm on Monday 7 June. Winners and finalists will be exhibited at ArtSpace and will be available for public viewing from Monday 7 June to Friday 9th July.

The Young Archie Competition entries close 5pm Wednesday 26 May and all the details can be found on the Gallery's website.

Mr Wholohan also said "If you have a teen who is looking for more creativity we have some youth workshops available during May as part of Street Scapes". The Gallery is hosting a Spray Painting Workshop with Reubszz, a Banna Lane Festival artist, on Saturday 1 May and collaborating with Succa Mum on a Teen Art Workshop on Saturday 22 May. These events are ticketed and booking is essential.
