New mum-of-two Sammy says giving birth to her second daughter via maternal assisted caesarean was a healing experience.
Under the care of obstetrician A/Prof Fiona Brownfoot, Sammy was actively involved in bringing Ruby into the world at Epworth Freemasons Maternity.
In a maternal assisted caesarean, the obstetrician partially lifts the baby, allowing the mother to then lift the baby out of her own womb and onto her chest for immediate bonding.
"I was quite unwell during the birth of my first daughter Annabelle, which was at another hospital almost two years ago. I suffered pre-eclampsia as well as other very serious complications and had an emergency caesarean," Sammy said.
"When I fell pregnant with Ruby, I didn't realise a lot of heaviness from that experience was still there.
"I describe my maternal assisted caesarean as a healing birth. It was an incredibly positive experience. I felt very well looked after – the whole team involved at Epworth Freemasons were amazing."
A/Prof Brownfoot said supporting a positive birth experience was so important.
"Listening to Sammy's story about her first birth and birth trauma, it was really clear that we wanted to make this a healing birth," she said.
"A maternal assisted caesarean enabled Sammy to be in control the whole time, and the first one to see, touch and hold her baby. It was incredibly empowering and so beautiful to be part of."
The arrival of their healthy baby girl came as a big relief for Sammy and her husband Chris – while almost two-year-old Annabelle is settling into her new role of big sister.
"We have been living in Annabelle's world until now," Sammy laughed. "She has adjusted surprisingly well. When Ruby is crying, she tries to help and is very gentle with her baby sister.
"Ruby has really completed our family."
A maternal assisted caesarean may not be suitable for every patient and to ensure the safety of the mother and the baby, medical criteria apply. Women considering this kind of birth should discuss their individual situation with their obstetrician
