Escapee charged in Newcastle

A correctional facility prisoner has been charged after allegedly escaping from a health care facility in Newcastle, NSW Police say.

Police were called to a hospital on Lookout Road, New Lambton Heights, just before 3pm today (Wednesday 1 November 2017), after reports the man had escaped.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command established a perimeter and commenced a search.

The 36-year-old man was located in nearby bushland about 3.30pm (Wednesday 1 November 2017), where he was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station.

The man was charged with escape lawful custody and refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 2 November 2017).
