ESCWA Hosts Inaugural Arab Consumer Protection Forum

Manama, Bahrain - 20-21 February 2024

What: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Consumer Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in Bahrain, are launching the first Arab Consumer Protection Forum.

When: Tuesday 20 & Wednesday 21 February 2024, starting 9:00 a.m. (Manama time)

Where: The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Manama, Bahrain

Who: The opening session will feature:

  • Mr. Abdulla Bin Adel Fakhroo, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Kingdom of Bahrain
  • Ms. Rola Dashti, UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary (video message);
  • Mr. Pedro Manuel Moreno, Deputy Secretary General, UNCTAD

The Forum will bring together high level representatives of consumer protection authorities in the Arab region, academics, experts from UN entities, international and regional organizations, and other local professionals and officials engaged in consumer protection policy enforcement.

Why: Consumer protection is a fundamental aspect of economic and social development in the Arab region, as it plays a crucial role in ensuring fair and transparent business practices, safeguarding the rights of consumers, and promoting economic development.

The first Arab Consumer Protection Forum serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences regarding consumer protection policies and their enforcement among Arab stakeholders.
