Exercising your dog in shire

Want to know where you can walk your dog off leash in the shire?

New requirements for dog owners and dog walkers in Macedon Ranges Shire came into effect on 1 January. Dogs in public places must now be on a leash, except in designated off-leash areas. Dogs also must be under effective control at all times and cannot be left unattended.

Download maps of the new off leash areas, or pick up a brochure at a Council service centre or at your local veterinarian or pet supply store.

There are more than 50 designated off-leash areas for dogs. There are also some environmentally sensitive areas where dogs are now prohibited.

The new requirements are a result of public consultation which began with the development of the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2017-2021. Council has worked to balance the needs of dogs, their owners and the broader community in introducing these new off-leash dog areas. The introduction of prohibited areas focuses on reducing the impact of dogs on the natural environment.

Signs will be installed at relevant sites to help dog owners identify the areas where they will be able to exercise dogs off leash as well as the areas where dogs are now prohibited.
