Expressions Of Interest Open For Aboriginal Reference Group - Wollongong

Wollongong City Council is seeking expressions of interest from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to be members of Council's Aboriginal Reference Group.

The Aboriginal Reference Group gives advice to Council about issues related to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Wollongong.

The members help to provide a connection between Council and the Aboriginal community and promote activities that celebrate Aboriginal culture.

Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the Aboriginal Reference Group is highly respected and impart a depth of knowledge to support Council activities.

"We're committed to establishing meaningful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members," she said.

"That's why we actively seek the advice of the Reference Group on a breadth of issues that are important and affect local communities.

"The Reference Group helped to develop our Reconciliation Action Plan, support the delivery and programming of celebration events like NAIDOC Week, and advise on relevant policies.

"If you are interested or know someone who would be ideal in the role, I encourage you to see what's involved and apply before Friday 31 October."

The Reference Group is made up of eight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community representatives and will be supported by two Councillors and a Council Officer.

All group members are expected to follow the Aboriginal Reference Group Charter .

The membership on the group is voluntary and is not a paid role. The group will meet on a bi-monthly basis (six times per year), with the opportunity for meetings to be held at various community locations around Wollongong.
