Extortion and weapons charges at Gold Coast

Detectives from the Gold Coast Major and Organised Crime Squad have charged two men in relation to the alleged extortion of a 62-year-old man.

Police will allege the 65-year-old Surfers Paradise man and 39-year-old Robina man, over a period of ten days threatened violence against a 62-year-old man unless he gave them a sum of $400,000.

Yesterday at approximately 11.30am, the men were taken into custody at a Lae Drive shopping centre at Runaway Bay, where it is alleged they were continuing attempts to extort money from the 62-year-old man.

A search of the 39-year-old man allegedly located a knife and a small quantity of testosterone.

The 65-year-old man has been charged with one count of extortion with intent to gain benefit with threat of detriment.

The 39-year-old man has been charged with one count each of extortion with intent to gain benefit with threat of detriment, possessing a dangerous drug and possession of a knife in a public place.

Both men are expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court this morning.

Investigations remain ongoing.
