Extreme speeder caught

A man has been arrested and his car impounded after he was caught driving at extreme speeds in Virginia overnight.

Just before 11pm Saturday 7 January police were called to Taylors Road after reports of cars doing burn-outs in the area.

A police traffic patrol spotted a Ford sedan leaving the area east on Robert Road. The patrol activated their emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but it failed to do so and took off at speed. Police called in PolAir, who were nearby, to assist.

PolAir tracked the car on east on Angle Vale Road, then south onto Port Wakefield Road, where the car allegedly reached speeds of up to 200km/h. The car turned north onto Old Port Wakefield Road, then appeared to blow a tyre and spin-out as it turned west onto Pratt Road coming to a stop.

As PolAir was watching the car from above when they saw the driver allegedly get out and throw an item into the bushes.

When police arrived at the scene the driver, a 27-year-old Hamley Bridge man, was arrested. A quick search of the bushes near by uncovered a Gel Blaster firearm.

The man has been charged with drive dangerously to escape police pursuit, drive at an extreme speed, unregistered, drive contrary to defect, unassigned plates and possess firearm without a licence. The car was towed from the scene and impounded for 28 days. The man did not apply for bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday.
