Far North Dog Squad Sniffs Out 12 Offenders In 3 Weeks

Police Dogs Ace, Duke, DJ and Elvis have helped locate 12 property offenders between April 27 and May 19.

On May 19, Police Dog Duke tracked a 17-year-old Earlville boy and a 16-year-old Mooroobool boy after they allegedly fled from a Subaru Outback, stolen from Yorkeys Knob on May 18.

The vehicle was allegedly abandoned on Balaclava Road around 9pm with PD Duke locating the boys around 30 minutes later.

The 17-year-old boy was charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and stealing.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court on May 30.

The 16-year-old boy was charged with one count each of unlawful use of motor vehicle, stealing, enter premises, and unlicensed driving.

He was due to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court on May 20.

On May 16, Police Dog DJ located two teenage boys allegedly involved with the theft of a Hyundai Tucson stolen from a Trinity Park address earlier that morning.

Police Dog DJ successfully tracked the two boys, who allegedly attempted to flee, to Anne Street where they were arrested.

Officers from the Tactical Crime Squad arrested a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl nearby.

All four teenagers were charged with a total of 21 charges including seven counts of unlawful use of motor vehicle and seven counts of stealing as well as enter dwelling, and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The 16-year-old boy was refused bail were due to appear before the Cairns Childrens Court on May 19.

The three other teenagers were due to appear before the Cairns Childrens Court on May 21.

On April 27, Police Dog Ace tracked a 27-year-old White Rock man who was hiding behind a tree in an Arizona Crescent backyard.

The man was wanted on an arrest warrant in relation to several property offences.

He was charged with three counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence, possess by night instrument of house breaking prior conviction of crime relating to property, and fail to properly dispose of needle and syringe.

He was scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on May 6.

Officer in charge of the Far North Dog Squad Sergeant Dave Raymond said the General Purpose Police Dogs are a valuable asset to the District's ongoing investigations into property crime.

"The dogs have unique skills and abilities that allow them to track offenders quickly in situations where they're evading police, or have run from stolen cars," Sergeant Raymond said.

"We work closely with General Duties, Property Crime and Tactical Crime Squad officers, who share our dogged determination to ensure these people are located quickly.

"If you see us jumping your fence or running through your backyard, don't be alarmed and please ensure your dogs are kept inside or on a lead.

"We're very grateful to the Cairns community for their ongoing support when we are trying to apprehend offenders."
