Far North Police Charge 50+ Property Offenders in 4 Days

Far North police supported by specialist units have charged 59 people with 248 property offences since Sunday, as part of efforts to drive down property crime in the region.

A total of 161 people have been charged with 730 offences since 9 August.

The offences include unlawful use of a motor vehicle, enter premises, breach of bail, stealing, drug offences and firearm offences.

Local police have been bolstered by the arrival of the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) this week, assisting officers to respond to public disorder, critical incidents and high-risk offenders.

On 20 August, police arrested a 16-year-old White Rock boy in relation to the alleged theft of a Toyota Hilux and Rav 4 from an Edge Hill property on 14 August.

He was charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, attempted dwelling with intent at night, and attempted enter dwelling with intent by break at night.

On 16 August police received reports of a man causing damaged to a drinking fountain and police dog memorial at Aeroglen.

A 48-year-old South Australia man was arrested and charged with two counts of wilful damage and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on 1 September.

Police also conducted 271 bail checks and located three weapons out of 739 wandings as part of high-visibility proactive patrols.

Far North District Superintendent Mick Searle said police have seen promising results following the arrest of several high priority offenders earlier this month.

"When there are people causing serious risk to our community, our officers take a relentless approach to apprehending those offenders, and putting them before the courts," Superintendent Mick Searle said.

"Having units like PSRT in town is supporting the great work our local police do day in and day out.

"The community can be assured that we are doing everything we can to help them feel safe, including disrupting and preventing crime through high-visibility and covert operations."
