The National Farmers' Federation (NFF) has welcomed today's announcement by the Minister for Trade Don Farrell confirming the establishment of the Trade Diversification Network and the inclusion of the NFF in its membership.
NFF Interim Chief Executive Su McCluskey said it was essential agriculture was at the table given more than 70% of what Australian farmers produce is sold overseas.
"The NFF welcomed the Federal Government's $50 million commitment to help affected sectors diversify markets when the United States imposed a 10% tariff on all Australian exports," Ms McCluskey said.
"Today's announcement is the next step in turning that commitment into action.
"Trade diversification strengthens farm businesses, supports the economy and builds resilience in the face of rising protectionism."
The NFF has already been on the ground in Southeast Asia, working alongside Government and industry to build trade pathways for Australian agriculture.
"The recent Southeast Asia trade mission showed there is strong demand for Australian produce and partnerships with agribusiness, underpinned by trust in our farmers, our systems and our standards," Ms McCluskey said.
"On this trade mission I saw firsthand how Australian agritech and innovation are already making an impact, and how ready the region is for more collaboration.
"The success of the Southeast Asia engagement demonstrates exactly why a coordinated Trade Diversification Network is important, not only in Southeast Asia but across the globe.
"The NFF remains steadfast in its commitment to work with its members and Government to secure the best long-term outcomes for Australian farmers.
"Open markets, fair rules and strong trade partnerships are essential to Australia's economic strength, food security and regional prosperity."
