Fatal crash on Victoria Road in Northcote

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Group are at the scene of a fatal crash which occurred last night in Northcote, Victoria Police say.

The crash happened on Victoria Road after a short pursuit which commenced at 11pm.

Investigators have been told that members from a highway patrol attempted to intercept a car on Dundas Street in relation to a traffic matter.

The car, a 2010 Holden sedan, failed to stop and allegedly took off at a fast rate of speed, turning right on to Victoria Road.

As the members turned into Victoria Road they saw that the car had collided with a parked vehicle without stopping and as it continued travelling away from them, they activated their lights and siren.

As they came over a rise in the road they saw the Holden sedan had crashed into a fence and two parked cars and a man, who they believed to be the driver, lying on the road.

The members went to the man’s aid but he died at the scene.

The man is still to be formally identified.

An investigation into the incident has commenced and will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command as per normal procedure.
