As stated by Acting Area Commander Inspector Stu Harvey:
Police can confirm one person has died following a crash involving a car and a train near Invercargill today.
The crash occurred about 1.20pm, near the intersection of East Road (State Highway 1) and Mill Road South when the vehicle was hit by a train.
The sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.
An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
Closures remain in place on Mill Road South, between Otaramika Road and SH1, and SH1, between Racecourse Road and Mill Road North. Access is available for residents within the cordon.
