Fatal stabbing in Newcastle

A man has died and another man is in custody after a stabbing incident in Newcastle last night, NSW Police say.

About 9.10pm (Wednesday 6 December 2017), emergency services responded to reports of an assault at Delray Court, Maryland, about 14km from Newcastle.

A 52-year-old man was located with multiple stab wounds to his chest and stomach.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he died at the scene.

A short time later, officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command, with the assistance of the Dog Unit, arrested a 21-year-old man nearby.

The man was taken to Waratah Police Station where he is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

The pair were known to each other.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
