Federal Libs continue to put coal ahead of Tasmania

Tasmanian Labor
  • Angus Taylor undermines Tasmanian energy projects
  • Federal Minister does not believe in or understand Tasmanian business cases
  • Guy Barnett needs to publicly condemn comments
  • Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor is putting a second Basslink and pumped hydro at risk with his alarming comments today on ABC's Insiders, where he confirmed the Morrison Government would underwrite more coal projects.

Shadow Energy Minister David O'Byrne said it was clear from Mr Taylor's comments today and previously that he is either playing both sides of the street or just doesn't understand the issue.

"The Federal Minister completely undermines the business case for pumped hydro, increased wind generation and the second connector," Mr O'Byrne said.

"Mr Taylor's comments on his government backing more coal projects show just how little he understands about a second interconnector or pumped hydro and their potential for Tasmania.

"Tasmania needs a Federal Energy Minister who grasps the concept of clean energy and our state's role going forward, not a pro-coal ideologue like Angus Taylor.

"Angus Taylor has completely undermined the business case for a second Basslink and he probably doesn't even know it.

"It's time for Tasmania's Energy Minister Guy Barnett to actually put Tasmania first and publicly condemn Angus Taylor's comments instead of simply mindlessly repeating his scripted media lines ad nauseam."

    David O'Byrne MP
