Festive Drink And Drug Drivers In Police Sights

Police detected 23 drink and drug drivers during a major traffic operation conducted across metropolitan Adelaide last week.

Between 4pm and 11pm on Friday 19 December, officers from Traffic Services Branch carried out a coordinated alcohol and drug testing operation in the lead‑up to the festive season, testing more than 2000 drivers during the six hour period.

Fourteen drivers will face court after being detected for drink driving offences, while nine drivers were found driving under the influence of drugs.

Police impounded four vehicles and 11 drivers were issued an immediate loss of licence.

Superintendent Shane Johnson, Officer in Charge of Traffic Services Branch, said the results serve as a strong reminder that police will maintain a visible presence throughout the Christmas and New Year period.

"Every year we see families devastated by the consequences of drink and drug driving, and it is entirely preventable"

"As we head into Christmas and New Year, we're asking every motorist to make safe driving choices. Plan ahead, organise a lift, and look out for your mates. One reckless decision behind the wheel can change lives forever."

Police will continue holding drivers to account throughout the festive period to keep South Australians safe on the roads.
