Filling gaps in bushfire recovery

As the Snowy Monaro region moves along the road to recovery, the Bushfire Recovery Team is taking the opportunity to check in with the community.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council and the NSW Government are committed to supporting the community in the days, months and years ahead. To assist with this, the Snowy Monaro Recovery Needs Survey has been launched as a way of monitoring that progress and planning for the future.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Peter Beer is encouraging residents who lost a dwelling in the bushfires to complete the survey and provide feedback that will help all agencies involved in the recovery process better understand resident’s needs and issues.

“So much has already been achieved, but we still have a long way to go with recovery. Given the size and complexity of the effort needed, everyone involved is mindful of people and needs falling through the cracks,” Mayor Peter Beer said.

“Our black summer has changed everyone and everything forever, the emotions, reactions and tasks big and small that flow from that are changing all the time. As we start to come out of COVID-19 it’s important we reset and go forward together.”

Council has partnered with Service NSW and Resilience NSW to develop a short survey that will be delivered to our residents who have lost a dwelling.

The Snowy Monaro Recovery Needs Surveys will be distributed to applicable residents. The survey can be completed on your computer, tablet or smart phone, or if you would prefer to complete the survey by phone or have a paper copy forwarded to you, please call the Recovery Team 1300 345 345 .

“We need to make the survey easy and accessible so that we get as big a picture as possible,” Mayor Peter Beer said.

Our Recovery Team continues to be in touch with our community and completing over the phone surveys with residents who may not have lost a dwelling but have suffered significant lost.

Answers to the recovery survey will help the lead agencies:

• Better understand individual needs and identify how we can all help

• Keep people informed about assistance that is available and refer people to services that can help.

“The results of this survey will allow us to tailor our work and reach people that perhaps need more support than they have wanted or needed to date,” Mayor Beer said.

“Our approach is sensitive to the needs of each person which includes privacy, dignity, respect and connection to land and community.”
