Find your space in new gallery exhibition

The concept of space can mean different things to different people and the new Caloundra Regional Gallery exhibition, Painting Space (opening April 5), shows four distinct ways in which contemporary painters have engaged with ideas of space in their work.

The exhibition features the work of award-winning artist and exhibition curator, Margaret Ellen Turner alongside early career artists Carley Cornelissen, Alison Mooney and Robyn Shaw.

Turner said the exhibition brought together bold and vibrant contemporary work representing space in very personal ways.

"The exhibition ranges from abstract work where colourful lines appear to burst out of the canvas, to a mural populated with flora and fauna, both indigenous and exotic, to portraits of our coastal shore and paintings depicting the majestic escarpments and gorges of the MacDonnell Ranges," Turner said.

Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said gallery visitors will enjoy seeing the work of the dynamic group of accomplished artists.

"It's intriguing to see the different ways in which these four very different artists have depicted the concept of space," Cr Baberowski said.

"The artists have also collaborated on an installation which invites you into their personal painting spaces through video, journals and photos, to provide a highly personal and invaluable insight into the creative process.

"Providing the opportunity for a local artist to curate an exhibition at our regional gallery and elevate the profile of three emerging artists is just another way council is delivering on its vision for a healthy, smart, creative community."
