Finke Desert Race to Attract Thousands to Australia

NT Government

During the biggest year of motorsport in history, the Finocchiaro CLP Government is reinforcing the Northern Territory's reputation as a premier destination for events and tourism, with the iconic Tatts Finke Desert Race roaring into Central Australia this long weekend.

Also known as 'Australia's Greatest Desert Race' and one of the NT's largest annual sporting events, motorsport enthusiasts from across the country will descend on Finke, hoping to be crowned 'King of the Desert.'

More than 500 competitors will take on the gruelling 446-kilometre course between Alice Springs and the remote community of Aputula (Finke), a race recognised globally as one of the toughest and most remote off-road challenges. Over 12,000 spectators are expected to camp along the track.

Minister for Major Events and Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby said Finke is more than just a race; it's a major tourism drawcard that puts the Territory, especially Alice Springs, on the global stage.

"With its widespread attention across Australia and internationally, Finke is an opportunity to showcase our unique landscapes, culture, and experiences while boosting our economy," said Ms Boothby.

"Last year alone, Finke contributed more than $12 million to the Central Australian economy, filling accommodation, boosting local businesses, and promoting adventure tourism."

"It also creates opportunities for Aboriginal-owned enterprises and community groups in and around Aputula, who play an important role in the event's success and cultural activations."

The action kicks off Thursday, 6 June with the Finke Street Party in the Alice Springs CBD hosted by the Alice Springs Town Council. The two-day race begins with the outbound leg on Sunday 8, June followed by the return run on Monday, 9 June.

Spectators will enjoy a spectacular showcase of vehicles, from championship motorcycles to some of the largest Trophy Trucks in the southern hemisphere.

Ms Boothby said the CLP government is proud to support major events like Finke in the Northern Territory.

"Our first Budget includes $36.5 million dedicated to major events, because we promised Territorians a year of action, certainty, and security," said Ms Boothby.

Finke Desert Race Committee President Antony Yoffa said: "The biggest annual sporting event in Alice Springs is almost upon us and we look forward to welcoming thousands of Interstate visitors to the Northern Territory."

"I congratulate all the volunteers who have agreed to help in this year's event; their support is critical to the success of this iconic community event.

"To all the lucky campers along the track, there in nothing like sitting around a campfire, waking to ice on your swag and then listening to the road of a trophy truck - stay safe and have a wonderful time."
