Residents across the Surf Coast Shire will start to notice contractors delivering a Fire Prevention Grass Slashing program over the next month.
"Above-average rainfall has been recorded through spring and summer, so after consultation and direction from our Community Emergency Management Team, roadside slashing will be undertaken to reduce the fuel load on roadsides across the shire," said Cr Adrian Schonfelder. "The works started today and are expected to last for 3-4 weeks."
The works will begin in the northern part of the shire and work from east to west to the Princes Highway. Following this work, contractors will continue from the Princes Highway to Cape Otway Road/Mount Duneed Road from the east to west direction, which will complete the grassland areas and finish at the perimeter of the more forested area.
"A similar program was successfully delivered by the same contractors in November and December of 2020, prior to the summer season," said Cr Schonfelder. "We thank the community for their patience as this work is undertaken and apologise for any inconvenience caused by the work."
Alongside the Fire Prevention Grass Slashing program, the more forested areas and coastline will be managed by Council's Reach Mover/Slasher during this time.
